Technology has changed the way we access information, connect with others, and manage our daily lives. When it comes to mental health, there’s a wealth of resources available at our fingertips through mental health apps. These apps offer a variety of tools and techniques to support our emotional well-being, from meditation and mindfulness practices to mood tracking and therapy resources. In this blog post, we’ll explore the benefits of mental health apps and highlight some recommended apps that can empower you on your mental health journey. The following apps are all ones that I have used and recommend to my clients.
Daylio: This is a popular mood tracking and journaling app designed to help users track their daily moods and activities that I highly recommend to my individual therapy clients. With Daylio, users can quickly and easily log their mood and activities throughout the day using customizable icons and emojis. The app allows users to identify patterns in their moods and behavior over time, providing valuable insights into their mental health and well-being. Additionally, Daylio offers features such as goal setting, reminders, and mood statistics to help users better understand and manage their emotional health. You can also send reports from the app to loved ones or your therapist to discuss in sessions!
Day One: Day One is a digital journaling app that allows users to capture their thoughts, experiences, and memories in a convenient and organized way. With Day One, users can write journal entries, add photos, videos, and locations, and customize their entries with tags and reminders. The app offers features like automatic backup, password protection, and syncing across devices, making it easy for users to keep track of their journal entries and revisit them at any time. Whether you’re looking to document daily life, reflect on past events, or simply express yourself creatively, Day One provides a user-friendly platform for journaling on the go. This app also offers daily writing prompts which I enjoy filling out every morning!
Gratitude Apps: A gratitude app is a digital tool designed to help users cultivate a habit of gratitude by recording and reflecting on things they are thankful for. Users can typically create daily or weekly entries where they list things they appreciate, reflect on positive experiences, or express gratitude towards others. Some gratitude apps also offer features such as reminders, prompts, and gratitude challenges to encourage regular practice. By incorporating gratitude into their daily routine, users may experience improved mood, increased resilience, and greater overall well-being. On iPhone, search for Gratitude and explore different options but the one I have used has a pink icon.
FreeCBT: This app is based on cognitive behavioral therapy and is a great tool to use between therapy sessions once you have reviewed CBT techniques with a mental health professional. In this app, you record the automatic thought, cognitive distortions, thought challenges, and alternative thought. This app helps you to break negative thinking patterns to reduce anxiety over time. This is also a great way to record thoughts to bring to therapy sessions and discuss further with your therapist!
Tappy: “Tappy” is an interactive mobile app designed to help users manage their mental health and well-being through fidgeting/tapping. It offers guided tapping sessions for various purposes, such as reducing stress, anxiety, and negative emotions, as well as promoting relaxation and positive affirmations. The app typically provides a user-friendly interface with customizable tapping exercises and progress tracking features to support users in their emotional healing journey. This app also includes meditations, games, fidgets, and haptics. This app is a great option for neurodivergent clients as well.
WorryBox: The “Worry Box” iPhone app is a tool designed to help users manage anxiety and stress by recording and addressing their worries. This is a simple app that lets you “burn” the box with your memories to help slow down or stop perseverating thoughts. This app is similar to thought defusion techniques but can give you more of a visual representation.
SpinTheWheel: This is a great app for analysis paralysis when it comes to decision making. Simply add your tasks to the wheel to get started and it makes the decisions for you. I also enjoy using this for fun activities or hobbies combined with chores or tasks! This app can help to reduce anxiety and ADHD symptoms that may make it difficult to get started on tasks.
Mental health apps can be valuable tools for supporting our emotional well-being and empowering us to take control of our mental health. Whether you’re looking to practice mindfulness, track your mood, or access therapy resources, there’s likely an app out there that meets your needs. Remember to explore different apps and find the ones that resonate with you and your unique mental health goals. More common apps for mental health and meditation include Headspace and Insight Timer. With the right tools and support, you can take proactive steps towards improving your mental health and living a more fulfilling life.
