Can Video Games Benefit Mental Health?

As a mental health therapist and a gamer myself, I’ve spent many hours unwinding in front of some of my favorite games. Recently, I’ve played the cozy game “Lake” on Switch where I worked as a delivery person navigating the return to my hometown. This game was not only relaxing, but also worked on problem-solving and relationship building skills. Video games are no longer for purely entertainment as they can provide benefits to our emotional, social, cognitive, and mental health.

Let’s explore some ways gaming can benefit mental health:

Stress Relief and Relaxation: Video games offer an immediate escape from life’s pressures, allowing players to unwind and recharge. Whether immersing in a storyline or enjoying gameplay mechanics, gaming distracts from stress which can promote calmness. There are also fitness games like Ring Fit on Switch that can improve physical health which is often associated with improvements in mental health.

Cognitive Stimulation: Contrary to belief, games provide mental workouts. They demand strategic thinking, problem-solving, and quick decisions, enhancing cognitive abilities like memory and attention.

Social Connection: In our digital age, gaming fosters friendships and community. Multiplayer options enable players to bond, reducing loneliness and fostering camaraderie.

Emotional Regulation: Gaming offers a safe space to explore and express emotions. Overcoming challenges boosts self-esteem and resilience, preparing players for real-life hurdles.

Therapeutic Potential: Mental health professionals are integrating gaming into therapy for better engagement and outcomes. Game-based metaphors and therapeutic games aid in psychoeducation and interventions.

Remember, moderation is crucial as excessive gaming can lead to negative effects like sleep problems and addiction. Gaming, when balanced, can be a powerful tool for mental well-being, offering stress relief, cognitive stimulation, social connection, emotional regulation, and therapeutic support.
