Coping Strategies for Post-Election Stress

In times of uncertainty and stress after the election, it’s difficult to know what to do next. Here are some practical strategies for processing post-election stress:

Give Yourself Space to Process Emotions

Allow yourself time to process your feelings without judgment. Journaling, talking with a trusted friend, or expressing emotions creatively (through art, music, or movement) can be helpful ways to work through your feelings. Reaching out to a therapist to process feelings can also be a helpful strategy.

Focus on Areas You Can Control

During times of uncertainty, it’s helpful to channel energy into actions within your control. Focus on areas where you can make a positive difference, such as community involvement, volunteer work, or advocacy. Taking action can bring a sense of empowerment and allow you to contribute constructively to the change you wish to see.

Engage in Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness can be a powerful tool for managing post-election stress. Practice grounding techniques like deep breathing, mindful observation, or progressive muscle relaxation to bring yourself into the present moment. When you start to feel overwhelmed, these exercises can help you pause, recenter, and reduce anxiety.

Connect with Supportive Community

Surround yourself with people who respect your perspectives and offer constructive support. Avoid contentious discussions if you’re not ready for them, and instead seek out groups or individuals who focus on healing and resilience. Engaging in community activities, whether online or in person, can foster a sense of connection and shared purpose. Support groups and pride centers can be great resources for creating community.

Set Goals and Focus on Personal Growth

Setting short-term personal goals—such as developing a new skill, prioritizing wellness, or spending time on creative projects—can be a great way to channel your energy productively. This approach can help you regain a sense of purpose and control, offering positive momentum as you move forward.

Practice Self-Compassion

Many people find themselves feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or even fatigued after intense emotional periods like elections. Be kind to yourself, acknowledging that these feelings are natural and part of the adjustment process. Practicing self-compassion involves being gentle with yourself, accepting your own emotions, and recognizing your limits.

Seek Professional Support

If post-election stress is affecting your ability to function or causing persistent feelings of anxiety or sadness, reaching out to a therapist may be beneficial. Therapy provides a safe space to process emotions, learn stress-management techniques, and develop resilience in uncertain times.
